Its internal development name was V100, under which it and its platform (not directly shared with any other model) are also known. Daewoo explained that the name Leganza originated from the combination of two Italian words - elegante (elegant) and forza (power). [edit] Development The Leganza was a part of Daewoo's effort to develop a lineup of proprietary vehicles to replace previous GM-licensed models. Sister projects to the V100 are the T100 Daewoo Lanos and J100 Daewoo Nubira. The development of "x100" cars involved the work of many subcontractors and suppliers. This involved, among others, ZF with regard to transmissions and Holden concerning the engines. Leganza was styled by the famous Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign. It is believed that this design was inspired by Giugiaro's 1990 Jaguar Kensington concept car, a pedigree Leganza's body shares with the 1991 Toyota Aristo. In case of Leganza, however, Giugiaro had to deal with a slightly shorter vehicle with front-wheel rather than rear-wheel drive, which, combined with Daewoo styling cues, resulted in a controversial appearance although contemporary reviews praised the styling. [edit] Marketing Daewoo rapidly expanded their distribution network with the inception of new models, which made the Leganza present in the markets of most countries, albeit not necessarily with sales success. Daewoo placed special emphasis on developing markets, which involved the assembly of Leganzas in countries like Poland, Romania, Russia and Uzbekistan, in plants owned by Daewoo or under license agreements. Nevertheless, this concerned CKD or SKD assembly only, as all Leganzas were effectively made at Daewoo's Bupyong plant in Korea. It is worth noting that, contrary to many Korean cars sold worldwide, the Leganza was almost invariably sold under the Daewoo Leganza name, the only exception being the Doninvest Kondor, a short-lived version assembled by the Russian Doninvest corporation on Taganrog's TagAZ. At the time it was launched, the Leganza was a bit longer than most mid-size European or Asian cars, which is why it was initially marketed as an inexpensive executive car in some markets. [edit] Australian Marketing/improvements 2001–2002 Daewoo Leganza (V100) sedan (Australia). The base Leganza was offered with a 2.0L 4-cyl engine, 5 speed manual, hubcaps, cloth trim and all the standard power options. It had an optional 4 speed, hydraulically-operated transmission that was said to be rough operating, tended to hunt between gears, and do unnecessary downshifts to second gear. The suspension was too soft, and handling was floaty and unsure. In 1999, Daewoo successfully answered its critics. The rough operating hydraulic auto was replaced by an electronically controlled automatic transmission, which stopped the hunting between gears and random downshifts. The engine was upgraded to the 2.2L, which boosted power from 98Kw to 100Kw, giving better performance, but increasing fuel consumption. The Leganza also gained standard 15 inch alloy wheels, anti-theft alarm, and remote central locking. The suspension was fixed and improved, but sacrificed the smooth ride from the before model and the ability to soak up the bumps. In 2001 the Leganza gained leather upholstery, woodgrain trim, and an electric driver's seat. This was called the "Limited Edition". In 2002 the Nubria gained a leather interior, woodgrain, anti-theft alarm, alloy wheels and remote locking; this too was considered the "Limited Edition". [edit] Driveline The Leganza was a front-wheel drive car, available with a four-door sedan body only. The Leganza was powered by Holden-sourced E-TEC II DOHC 16V I4 engines (two displacements were made using the same block and bore, differing in stroke): 2.0 L (1998 cc) - 98 kW (131 HP), 184 N·m (136 lb·ft) of torque used in models sold in Europe 2.2 L (2198 cc) - 100 kW (134 hp), 191 N·m (141 lb·ft) of torque used mainly for the American and Australian market Both engines came with either a 5-speed manual transmission, or a 4-speed automatic. [edit] Replacement Contrary to Matiz or Nubira, the Leganza was not afforded a mid-life facelift, so there was no "V150" model (the xx50 designations are used by Daewoo to indicate facelifted versions of xx00 models). Rather than that, Daewoo increased the wheelbase of the V100 platform by 30 mm (1.2 in) to develop a new model, called Daewoo Magnus (V200), which was launched in 2000. Both models were sold side by side in Korea, and the Leganza got a small update (front grille) in 2001 - but the Magnus has not been launched internationally until Leganza's demise in 2002, effectively replacing it. Daewoo ceased North American sales by then, so the V200 was released as the Suzuki Verona in the United States and Canada. You know the sort, my custom doesn't matter as its such a piddly amount, sort of thing.So, I took my custom elsewhere. I went to my local Daewoo dealer (I was passing), and the first thing that struck me, was the different style of selling. I was not pressured, made to feel bad because I didn't put a deposit there and then, hurried, or any of that stuff. I took my time, test drove a few of their cars, and am happy to say, found one I really liked.Compared to the 1.4 Fiat Bravo S I previously owned, it was a dream. VERY spacious, comfertable for long journeys, the ride quality was very smooth (maybe not compared to the prestige cars, but see above points). the 2.0 Litre engine I found was very pokey for such a large car. It came with nice alloys, large wheels, air con and climate control, electronically adjustable drivers seat (cool), abs, speed proportional power steering, electric window / mirrors / sunroof, and for a few bob more, I got a 10 cd player in the boot, full leather seats, and luxury car mats.in 1999, this cam to a grand total of £15,995 (CDX). You cannot buy this spec, level of comfort and size forless than £20,000 in any other car. Pleased? Very. and you can more than likely buy the same spec car today, for alot less, due to Daewoos price reductions.Its serviced upto 3 years, 60,000 miles, I get AA cover, 3 year warranty (and this is even for the car mats! which I had replaced recently!) oh, and just to help a poor 20 year old who can't afford a BMW or Celica, I got my first years insurance FREE.So, I enjoy overtaking other cars on the motorway, country roads, and generally being a nuissance around town. I drive a car which is pretty rare. Not many other people are driving the same car as me, which may explain the suprised look on their face when I can still overtake them at 60, no probs.Only down point, the brakes could do with uprating for that size engine / car, but apart from that, a very VERY good alternative to prestige / family / sports or company cars.So, you remember saying its a Daewoo earlier.... The garage promised to change ......having been done. £1200 and a week later it was on my drive. I can't say it's been an outstanding 12 months in any way. Staid, boring, reliable - apart from a new battery to replace the original, just after the severest of cold days. Fuel consumption has been poor - around 30 mpg on a run and I'm not heavy footed. 38 mpg was the best I ever got, once! Its easy to maintain ......speeding up or a gradual pick up of speed the engine responds equally. The suspension is not too close to the road and neither too high. This aspect can be viewed as both good and bad aspect. The good being that its neither too high nor too low, and the bad aspect is, its neither too high or too low. The wide body allows the car to set itself on the road very comfortably. But if you are interested in a car which is reliable, loaded with extras and excellent value for money then you could do a lot worse. The automatic version is not overly powerful however when you kick it down to accelerate you notice the power much more. During urban driving the petrol disappers as if by magic but on the open road its not too bad. This is actually harder than it sounds and was made much easier when we found a Leganza SX registered in 2000 with relatively low mileage of 62k. The book price for a private sale is ridiculous at £500-£600 and these are actually changing hands at about £995 with service history. In practice few other small or medium sized cars that are half decent can be found under £950,in ......to £2k. With a little more time or money we could have found a CDX at this price, however the SX (base model) we bought is still well equipped compared to mainstream models and we are pleased with it. If service history is poor it is important to negotiate payment or discount towards getting the cambelt (essential these are changed at 40k and 80k miles), auxilliary belts,also the oil changed as parts are expensive. The service you get from the dealers is very good they are always on hand if you have any questions, and they are not ......was to much trouble, in the end it does not mater what the dealers are like it is the car is self that is the test. The car respondes well, the gear change is very possative, the speed senitive power sterring is good, but a little light in snow and icey condisions, and with the tracksion control and abs breaks i don't think that you can go far wrong with this car. ...
