It was replaced by the facelifted Daewoo Cielo—a car mechanically identical to the LeMans, differentiated only by its modified styling cues. The Cielo was subsequently replaced by the subcompact Daewoo Lanos and compact Nubira in 1997, except in some Central Asia markets where production of the four-door continues be manufactured in Uzbekistan. Like all Daewoos preceding it, the LeMans took its underpinnings from a European Opel design. In the case of the LeMans, the GM T platform-based Opel Kadett E was the donor vehicle, essentially just badge engineered into the form of the LeMans, and later the facelifted Cielo. In markets outside of South Korea, the original version of the car bore the Asüna GT, Asüna SE, Daewoo 1.5i, Daewoo Fantasy, Daewoo Pointer, Daewoo Racer, Passport Optima and Pontiac LeMans names. The LeMans was updated in 1994 and renamed the Daewoo Cielo in South Korea and some other international markets; the "LeMans" nameplate was not used at all for the facelifted model. Five-door hatchback models exported to Europe were badged Daewoo Nexia with the four-door sedan sometimes holding the Daewoo Racer name. The Daewoo Heaven name was also used. Sales of the LeMans began in 1988 in North America where it was sold as the Pontiac LeMans. In 1989 more models were released including a sportier Pontiac LeMans GSE based on the Opel Kadett GSi, with a 96 hp (72 kW) 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine. The GSE was available in a monochromatic paint scheme in red, white or silver with 14 inch alloy wheels, fog lights and a rear spoiler. The GSE also had the Recaro-style seats of the Kadett. A Pontiac LeMans SE sedan with upgraded equipment from the base and LE models also had the 96 hp (72 kW) 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine, also used in the Pontiac Sunbird. In North America, poor quality tarnished sales and the Pontiac LeMans and Asüna SE/GT were discontinued after 1993 with no replacement. Later that year, the Asüna brand was discontinued altogether. These new models were still based on the Opel Kadett E, underpinned by the "T-car" platform. There were various trim levels available; in the United Kingdom, where the car sold as the Daewoo Nexia, these were GLi (8-valve) and GLXi (16-valve) for the general public, with a "base" model available for large contracts. Unlike the Kadett, there was never a station wagon version available. Some European markets got the "Lifestyle" trim level; Spain and Portugal badged their GLi/GLXi equivalents "Chess"; the Benelux countries kept the GLi/GLXi trim levels. The GLi has an average performance with a 0–100 km/h time of 11.3 seconds and 85 hp (63 kW). However, the GLXi upped the power to 90 hp (67 kW) and the 0–100 km/h time was reduced to 10.5 seconds. The Cielo was made in India by DCM Daewoo Motors until the Korean Daewoo company went bankrupt. GM did not take over the Indian plant in Surajpur near Delhi and it was liquidated. [edit] Uzbekistan (1996–present) In Uzbekistan, UzDaewooAuto continues to manufacture the four-door sedan version of the Nexia, of which production began in June 1996.[2] A number of other Daewoo/Chevrolet models are produced and sold in Uzbekistan and neighbouring Kazakhstan, Russia, Moldavia, Azerbaijan and Ukraine. Nowadays it is available with three engines: a 1.5 litre SOHC (56 kilowatts (75 hp)), 1.5 litre DOHC (62 kilowatts (83 hp)) and 1.6 litre DOHC (81 kilowatts (109 hp)). The 1.6 version has more powerful brakes and transmission with additional long main gear. A facelift of the car, known as the Nexia II was presented at Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2008.[3] It was designed in the UK by Concept Group International LTD with cooperation of GM-Uzbekistan. In the Uzbekistani market, the Nexia II is sold under the Chevrolet, as opposed to under the Daewoo brand, while some export markets continue to receive the car as the "Daewoo Nexia". Boot space is large enough to fit all your weekly shopping in and more besides, drivers and front passengers legroom are more than ample but rear legroom is a tad short, like with all cars you can pull the front seats forward to increase rear legroom so im perhaps being slighlty over critical in this area but i felt i should mention it nonetheless. Daewoo do offer the technical service manual but it costs �120 !!! A bit much but would be very useful. If anyone has one they could let me copy I'd pay you a fair fee!!! Servicing is now done via vauxhall so not too many problems there. Parts are usually available as they are based on an old astra model. Cosmetics are a little more difficult to come by. All in all a good solid car that is actually quite quick ......definietly the ones to go for. Get one with good service history and under 40k and you'll have a reliable, fully featured car for under �1500. They are usually totally rust free to which is a major bonus. they have all the perks as mentioned above and are generally nice to drive. We had the 1.5gli saloon as it accomodated my families needs. Standard fittings included a ski hatch ( avid ski family we are not!) but not interior clock. Very basic interior but a relativley comfortable ride. Car came with three years service warranty and the work had to be carried out at a Halfords service center ......the car for 1 year the sunroof stopped working when it was opened,s o we had to manually close it by a key. Then the alarm began to go off when it pleased itself, both problems were fixed but continued to happen three new alars later and now the sunroof refused to open or shut we gave up having them fixed after the three year warranty had run out. The car has only ever been serviced by Daewoo, when the engine management light came on, mother took the car to Daewoo, they said it was nothing to worry about, huh what did they know, they didn't investigate ......been told to scrap the car, she called Daewoo, thier response was that it was out of warranty and told her to go away, the car has only done 18'000 miles, most people would do that in 14 months or so. After this we have spoken to numerous people all of whom have bought cars from Daewoo, they too have been told to go away, even the people who's vehicles are still under warranty. As i'm from Romania, it cannot be said that it's the same as UK :)). I spent 3900 EUR on it (second hand) and then i did some minor repairs to it for about 400 EUR. It's smooth when you want it and if you hit the gas it makes a nice noise for its 4 cylinders. The interior gives you a cheap feeling and it's not too spacious. The steering wheel is too low and you hit your ......1,5 L petrol version and it EATS the fuel, about 10L/100km urban (that's 23,67 mpg) which is a lot for 4 cyl, 1,5 L. The ride is fairly confortable, but the steering and the gearbox are a bit heavy. For your safety you get no more than the seatbelts. Other features include electrical windows, power steering (hardly), air conditioned and that's about it. It's known to have some problems with the brake pump after a while. The back box on my exhust went at the same time as my dad's (who has a Rover). His cost him �50 to replace and he took it to the nearest garage. Mine cost me �180 and the only place that would touch it was a Daewoo garage. That's something they don't tell you about Daewoos - try taking them to any garage other than a Daewoo dealer and you'll quickly find no one will touch them. If there was a workshop manual i could do the work myself as i am capable of doing the work myself. The only workshop manual you can get for the car is the mechanics version, priced at �150. I also find it hard to get parts due to there not being many scrap nexia's around,so i have to go through a dealer. My ......have to get a new exhaust. Its not needed much work done to it since first registered,so there isnt much wrong with owning the Nexia.Performance isnt bad,i have heard so many comments about it not cornering very well or slow top speed, but i havent had any problems in that area. The car will hit 70mph easy enough and a little more where needed.
